This article provides a workaround for the issue that Remote Desktop Connection 6.0 prompts you for credentials, before you establish a remote desktop connection.

Today I needed to find a password for a certain account I had used before (but had forgotten), and I remembered that I had stored the credentials in the Remote Desktop Connection Manager, Microsoft's free RD tool. Of course, it crossed my mind whether these credentials could be decrypted, and it turns out they can. Start typing “Remote Desktop” on Start Screen and click it from the search list to launch. Click Show Options to extend the option list. Type in the username, check the option “ Allow me to save credentials “, and click Save As button to save this setting in a dedicated RDP file, preferably maybe on the desktop.

Symptoms

After you install the Remote Desktop Connection 6.0 client update (update 925876), you may experience one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Remote Desktop Connection 6.0 prompts you for credentials before you establish a remote desktop connection.
  • Remote Desktop Connection 6.0 prompts you to accept the identity of the server if the identity of the server cannot be verified.
  • You may be unable to use a smart card to log on to Remote Desktop Connection 6.0, even though you could use a smart card to log on to Remote Desktop Connection 5.x.

Workaround

To work around this problem, turn off the new features in Remote Desktop Connection 6.0 to revert to the features in Remote Desktop Connection 5.x. To implement this workaround, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, click Run, type mstsc.exe, and then click OK.

  2. Click Options, and then click the General tab.

  3. Click Save As, and then type a file name in the File name box.

  4. Select the location where you want to save the remote desktop file, click Save, and then click Cancel.

    Note

    The saved file has the .rdp file name extension.

  5. Click Start, click Run, type notepad, and then click OK.

  6. On the File menu, click Open.

  7. In the Files of type list, click All Files.

  8. In the Look in list, locate and then click the file that you saved in step 4. Then, click Open.

  9. Locate the line that resembles as: authentication level: i: n

    Note

    The n placeholder represents the current authentication level.

  10. Change the authentication level to 0 so that the line becomes:
    authentication level:i:0

    Note

    When you set the authentication level to 0 , RDP 6.0 does not check for server authentication.

  11. Add the following line to the end of the file:enablecredsspsupport:i:0

    Note

    When this line is present, you do not have to provide credentials before you establish a remote desktop connection.

  12. On the File menu, click Save.

To connect by using Remote Desktop Connection, run the file that you saved in step 12.

Note

After you follow these steps, the new security features that Remote Desktop Connection 6.0 provides are removed. Additionally, Remote Desktop Connection 6.0 becomes incompatible with Windows Vista-based computers that have the Allow connections only from computers running Remote Desktop with Network Level Authentication option enabled in the system properties.

Notice: Currently, this tool doesn't work with the latest versions of Remote Desktop Connection utility.You can use the following tools to get the passwords stored by new versions of Remote Desktop Connection (6.0 or higher):

Versions History

  • Version 1.02 - Removed the command-line options that export the passwords to a file from the official version. A version of this tool with full command-line support will be posted on separated Web page.
  • Version 1.01 - The configuration is now saved to a file instead of the Registry.
  • Version 1.00 - First release.

This utility is released as freeware. You are allowed to freely distribute this utility via floppy disk, CD-ROM, Internet, or in any other way, as long as you don't charge anything for this. Using Remote Desktop PassView

Remote Desktop PassView doesn't require any installation process or additional DLL files.Just copy the executable (rdpv.exe) to any folder you like, and run it.After you run rdpv.exe, the main window display the passwords of .rdp located under your'My Documents' folder. The default .rdp file (Default.rdp) is usually stored in this location
If you want to recover that password of another .rdp file, just drag the file from Explorer intothe window of Remote Desktop PassView utility or use the 'Open .rdp File' option from the File menu.
Be aware that Remote Desktop PassView can only recover the passwords created by your current logged on user. It cannot recover the passwords of .rdp files created by other users.

Translating Remote Desktop PassView To Another Language

Remote Desktop PassView allows you to easily translate all menus, dialog-boxes, and other stringsto other languages.
In order to do that, follow the instructions below:
  1. Run Remote Desktop PassView with /savelangfile parameter:
    rdpv.exe /savelangfile
    A file named rdpv_lng.ini will be created in the folder of Remote Desktop PassView utility.
  2. Open the created language file in Notepad or in any other text editor.
  3. Translate all menus, dialog-boxes, and string entries to the desired language.
  4. After you finish the translation, Run Remote Desktop PassView, and all translated strings will be loaded from the language file.
    If you want to run Remote Desktop PassView without the translation, simply rename the language file, or move it to another folder.

Remote Desktop PassView is also available in other languages. In order to change the language of Remote Desktop PassView, download the appropriate language zip file, extract the 'rdpv_lng.ini', and put it in the same folder that you Installed Remote Desktop PassView utility.
