With SWAM instruments you can compose and arrange your orchestra pieces or concertos. SWAM Violin is an instrument based on physical modeling. So it is possible to control the main mechanical variables in real time. For example, the velocity controls the attack of the sound and the portamento time, as well when playing legato. Audio Modeling Swam Solo Strings (Violin, viola, cello, double bass) Walkthrough (Win 5 FREE Apps)

These are amazingly high quality and realistic physically modeled string instruments. Viola, violin, double bass and cello. Incredibly lightweight - each app is about 50MB. Forget about filling up your ipad or laptop space with huge sample libraries. These are smaller and likely better quality too. Although this video looks at the iOS/iPad version, everything here is relevant to the desktop too. I will focus on these used as Audio Units rather than standalone. This tutorial walkthrough gives a good overview of the main features and guides you through the UI, as well as demoing various presets and features. I am very impressed with how expressive these can be, and in these examples I am mostly controlling using my Seaboard MPE controller. See the timestamps in the video for full details of what is covered. Please note that there will be a bundle for these but at the moment Apple is still approving the bundle so they are currently only available individually, with a 33% off intro price til the end of May 2021.

I have 5 copies of any Swam String in strummer for iOS to give away to subscribers. Details of how to win are in the pinned comment at the top of the Youtube comments section. Good luck! These are only available to subscribers, but if you are not yet a subscriber you can simply subscribe now. If you are watching this after the event, make sure you subscribe so you don't miss out on future vids. I usually have free copies of apps to give away.🤞

    • This will premiere, with live chat in youtube, at 6pm Central European Time, 5pm UK time, and lasts about 30 mins. See some of you there!
  • And don’t forget that the Bleass Flanger giveaway still has another day to run!

  • Ohhhh, I’ll still be in work but I’ll try and check in. That double bass.... hope it works well with Geoshred.

  • I briefly wondered what string in strummer meant. Now I kinda want to strum a cello.

  • Good there will be an expert there! I hope someone from Audio Modeling comes but it is unlikely, I have them very short notice

  • So I think it is fair to say that these instruments are DAMN impressive, huh?

  • edited May 6

Double Bass got some bite to it, I think it would sound even more 'mean' with bow pressure or pick velocity maxed out!
(This is something real double bass players seldom dare to do since they risk breaking the strings).

Davie504 on the worlds biggest Double Bass (Actually Octo Bass)

This is a very fair point Samu. These great instruments would be more amazing if they let you go far beyond the limits of what they are emulating and allow things to get more extreme and whacky

  • Great review as ever . Thanks a lot for the effort you put into that.

Maybe that is something SWAM could do at some point in time?

The Yamaha VL-1 which had almost no limits on the value ranges for the instruments.

(Imagine if Yamaha would resurrect the DPS code and drop a iVL-1.app with MPE support?).

  • I had this detailed discussion with someone who had felt very disappointed that these couldn’t be pushed to a more extreme level. Imagine this sound engine but with the tweakability of a synth, would be insanely cool

  • Thanks @Gavinski for the excellent video (as usual). I Think you have persuaded me try some SWAM strings… will see how much the bundle is…

as an aside I noticed in the video that the preset list now contains a specific Geoshred preset. I have checked and this is now in the brass instruments as well. No mention of it in the upgrade notes but I assume it is now the preferred preset rather than the previous Seaboard… who knows but worth a try!

Thanks for all the hard work you put into your videos…

    That would indeed be awesome!

I had the pleasure (way, way, way back in time) to see the VL-1 in action (Yamaha had a demo at a local music store) and for wind instruments it was quite nice effect to set the dimensions of the pipe, what would a 20cm wide and 2meters long clarinet sound like and how did the material of the mouth piece affect the sound? (Needless to say the woofers got to work a bit...).

It was also capable of sounds that were as so far from the actual instruments as one could get...

On iOS/iPadOS the engine in GeoShred is well worth to investigate deeper...
...sure it's an old app bit very deep and rewarding once starting to dig in.
(I got the SWAM Tenor Sax IAP and it's lovely).

Yes, to see an audio Modeling pure physical modeling synth like Kaivo or Plasmonic or something would be amazing. 🤯

  • Do you know if this « GeoShred » preset allows to assign velocity and expression to the XY Pad ? I didn’t succeed at the time of Swam Brass beta. Thank you !

Paulo, by this « GeoShred » preset do you mean the preset 'MIDI Out iOS SWAM'? That preset was designed to control the SWAM Brass, and Velocity comes from 3D touch on phones with 3D touch, and KeyY touch (KeyY height for the initial touch) on other devices. There is a Velocity curve for either of these methods under 'Menu> Settings'.

The XY pad sends MIDI controllers. Velocity is not a MIDI controller its a part of a note message.

It is possible in the GeoSWAM strings to use the XY pad to send velocity because in GeoSWAM we extended the control set to allow the GeoSWAM instruments work with GeoShred's performance semantics. We have a control for the GeoSWAM instruments: 'Velocity Override' ( and 'Velocity Override Enable') that can be assigned to the XY pad, thus making it possible to set velocity on the XY Pad. These controls are meta to how MIDI works.

Since there is no MIDI controller to set velocity in SWAM (or most synths for that matter), at the moment, I can't think of a way for the XY pad to send velocity. That being said, Nick and I will discuss.

    Thanks,

    -pat

The preset for GeoShred that is now in the SWAM instruments is essentially an MPE preset. We used to instruct users to select the Seaboard Preset because it's pretty much MPE. The GeoShred Preset in SWAM is essentially an MPE preset.

    Thanks Pat.
I was primilarly meaning the 'GeoShred' preset inside SWAM instrument but this one works probably in conjuction with the 'MIDI Out iOS SWAM' inside Geoshred. So both go along together. Anyway, you answered the question.
In the same vein, I was about to send you an email to know how to have the 'velocity overriden' value sent to other synths via GeoShred MIDI OUT but you just answered this.
So for me, 'velocity override' is a real advantage for GeoSwam that is not possible with the combo Geoshred Midi control + SWAM standalone.

Not sure, I've pretty much exclusively been using my seaboard maybe someone else can comment

Just out of curiosity are any of these apps even partially polyphonic?

For example a bass can be abused to play more than one string at the same time...
(This is 'regular' bass but I've seen Double Bass players pull similar tricks).

  • Yeah, they’ve got a few modes like double strings and that sort of thing, makes a world of difference from the geoshred versions...

  • The Swam Solo Strings winners have now already been chosen and are as follows:

    K.A. Procell (double bass)
    N.K. Turley (cello)
    P.A.L. (violin)
    Simone Fabbri (double bass)
    Tahiche Guillem Barrocal (cello)
    Big congrats! 🎉 🎉 🎉 🎉 🎉

Here is a link to the video if you missed it:

These are fantastic, I strongly recommend buying the bundle while they are on intro price, especially if you have an MPE controller. If you don't, you can use a regular keyboard with expression pedal and mod wheel. If you want to just use your ipad, I recommend using Geoshred Control or Geoshred Pro, or Velocity Keyboard or KB-1

I also made a series of 3 videos on Swam Brass. Look through my archives to find those, and a ton of other good stuff. See you in the next video 👍

  • Cheers Gav....👍

Exactly, these and pizzicato mean that I will now rarely use the strings in the GeoSwam versions, sadly.
